The 3rd generation of our family-owned business is being inspired to lead right now.
Building something that provides a valuable service to others has been ingrained in my family by my father. It’s why Vantagepoint has been a success for over 40 years. Our company maintains a culture of respect, integrity, passion, and purpose even as we grow. An important part of my work includes encouraging our next generation to uphold our values, our culture, and the service we provide to help others.
Someday, my daughters will lead VantagePoint; and while I’ve been busy teaching them about how to run a company like ours, I’m also proud to share with you that on their own they have recognized the importance of paying our successes forward.
I was surprised recently to see how those lessons are quietly taking root. My older daughter Rachael was reading one of her favorite magazines. She came across a story about a girl who was creating backpacks for kids in shelters filled with essentials for school and some fun items too. Rachael decided she wanted to do something similar. She popped into my office one day, leaned over, and told me she was taking a dollar from the sale of each dozen eggs she and my younger daughter, Abby, sell to build her own fund for these kinds of backpacks. Of course, at 11 years old, it took a while for it to dawn on her how many eggs she would need to sell. After the shock wore off, I told her my team would help match her financially. I’m a proud father to tell you she worked hard and was able to donate 75 backpacks to a new shelter that has opened in our county. It’s such a good feeling when two areas of your life that are so important to you converge. I am so proud to continue the work my father began, and my heart is full knowing that my girls are learning such important lessons too. Someday I’ll retire, not any time soon, but when I do, I’ll be more than confident I’m leaving everything in good hands.
